Sophie Black
Director / Creative

Kia ora, I’m Soph - a Director and Creative based in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. I’m passionate about telling meaningful stories with imagination, empathy and humour.

I’ve worked in different creative capacities across the media industry for 15 years, both in NZ and the UK. On my way, I’ve enjoyed senior positions at some of Aotearoa’s biggest media organisations - TVNZ, NZME and OMD, and produced all sorts of carefully crafted work in commercials, short films, music videos, and documentaries.

I’ve teamed up with a bunch of global and national brands - leading creative on large campaigns and forging ongoing relationships. My favourite projects have been ones with a social cause at their heart; from supporting our blind/low vision whanau, shining a light on mental health or encouraging our rangatahi to vote.

Communication and collaboration are my biggest strengths, whether that’s day-to-day working with colleagues, clients and crew or translating complex ideas into a story people can connect to.

My most recent documentary “Believing is Seeing” explores a complicated intersection between neuroscience and the digital world and has had a successful film festival run this year, including being selected for Hot Docs Canada and receiving “Best Documentary” at VisionFeast Film Festival.

I’m currently leading a team of talented creatives at FUSE/OMD specialising in social media content. I’m also working on a NZ Film Commission short film as the writer/director
